This is a list of some of the Classic Volkswagen related books that I find of value. Some of the books are general repair and maintenance books that are a good references for restoring and maintaining your VW Bug while others are more specific to a particular topic like the aircooled engine.

I have found that owning several of these books is a good idea because each book is stronger in certain areas, plus the more books you have the better chance that the descriptions and pictures will help you fix your beetle.

While I have a 1966 VW Bug, I own books that cover more than just my year since I have a newer engine, a 12 volt electrical system, and upgraded safety parts such as dual circuit brakes. Having books from several years will allow you to swap parts from bugs of different years with more confidence.

How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive 19 Ed: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot

First published in 1969, this classic manual of automotive repair equips VW owners with the knowledge to handle every situation they will come across with any air-cooled Volkswagen. With easy-to-understand, fun-to-read information — for novice and veteran mechanics alike — anecdotal descriptions, and clear language, this book takes the mystery out of diagnostic, maintenance, and repair procedures, and offers some chuckles along the way.

Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia Service Manual, Type 1: 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969 (Volkswagen Service Manuals from Robert Bentley, Inc)

This book is an excellent source of information for novice and expert alike. It includes many exploded diagrams, photographs, and color wiring diagrams. If you own a 1966-1969 VW Bug or Karmann Ghia you NEED this book in your shop or garage!

This is the same Volkswagen book as above but for the 1970-1979 crowd, or if you are like me and want to swap parts between the years, it makes for another much needed book. It has allowed me to be confident in owning and using later model parts (like my entire engine) in my older bug.

VW Beetle & Karmann Ghia 1954 through 1979 All Models (Hayne's Repair Manual)

Haynes disassembles every Volkswagen subject for the 1954-1979 VW's and documents every step with thorough instructions and clear photos. Haynes repair manuals are used by the pros, but written for the do-it-yourselfer. I personally like the pictures in this one, many different ones than the other repair guides and this book has full wiring diagrams.
